"Rift/Gap /Hinge/A" was a widely acclaimed exhibition held at the Galerie nächst St. Stephan Rosemarie Schwarzwälder in Vienna at the turn of the year 2006/2007 with the artist Heinrich Dunst as curator. Dunst compiled relevant works from both Austrian and international contexts in which the antagonism between medium and sign, between "the visible and the sayable" is taken to an extreme. This approach also enabled him to establish illuminating links between fine art, film and literature.
The transferral of these exhibits into a book and with it their framing insinde another medium inevitably endagers the identity they derive from the interaction of media. This is the starting-point for the concept of co-editor Walter Pamminger, whose organisation of the material in stages and careful framing allow him to exploit to the full the reproductive possibilities of the book. In doing so he adresses the discrepancy between art and how art is presented while simultaneously expanding its semiotic compass.
